I'm finally going to build my new system.. I think. The last one I built is this:

4690K I5
16GB
MSI MOBO - Don't remember what one
1080 GPU

I'm thinking of this for my next one and ready to order parts:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/HXWvcx

Some questions I had were the GPU.. seems like positive reviews and not too expensive - on sale for $1200 at newegg. I also don't know if I need this MOBO.. I'm looking for a MOBO that will work great with the 9800X3D but what does this MOBO give me over another one for $300? I will be overclocking potentially. I was also told for this setup to keep the RAM at 6000 CL30 so that's why I picked it. Any suggestions?
I'm modelling it a bit on this: https://pcpartpicker.com/b/rVXbt6

Hmm, it depends level of performance you looking for. I find the 5080 to be very overpriced and hard to recommend when the 9070xt and 5070ti exist. I would avoid asrock with 9800x3d since there are reports of failures. 6000CL30 is fine for any zen 5 cpu. I only recommend 9800x3d for lower resolutions as the difference become smaller at high resolutions. Overlcocking won't help much on that cpu. X870 tomahawk is a good motherboard alternative.

I thought the 5080 outperforms both by a large margin?

Why won't OC on the CPU help much? Isn't that what it's made for?

What do you mean 9800x3d for lower resolutions?

I'll look at the tomahawk but why that one?

Overall I'm looking to game with high framerates and not be stuck on this performance strugglebus I've been on the last couple years.

The 5080 is somewhere from 10-15 percent better than 5070ti. It would be rather unnoticeable.

X3d processors have stacked cache and will limit how much voltage you can give it before it overheats. Overclocking headroom is very limited and not very useful.

9800x3d is the best gaming cpu but is much better than other cpus at 1080p. As your increases the resolution, the gpu becomes the bottlenecks and not the cpu.

X870 tomahawk is common recommendation as the feature set is strong and more expensive motherboard costs more and don't get much better past the $300ish mark. Motherboards typically doesn't affect performance much regardless.

What resolution do you game at and what if any storage will you be reusing?

Thanks for the input.. I really appreciate it. I don't know what kind of performance I'm going for. I've been struggling for years with my rig just to make things playable. If I could get 4k out of it that's great but not a requirement. I really just want higher framerates and be competitive in games instead of getting steamrolled all the time because of performance.

I play a number of games including Rust, Dune Awakenings, Battlefield, survival games, etc.

I think I am now leaning towards the 5070 ti. I'm currently gaming on a LG C3 48".

Battlefield + 5070 Ti screams 1440.

Are you saying that as a good thing? lol I can say my current system screams paperweight.
Hah it should play it just fine, a 5070 ti or rx 9070 xt should handle most games very well. I've included my picks below, you should have a lot of options available to you though. You could save a bit on the motherboard by going with X670E, B650E, X870, or B850. Just make sure that whatever board you go with has an onboard bios flash option that you can use to update the bios the latest version without having it fully built to ensure support for the Ryzen 9000 series.

I'm not near a microcenter. =( I opted for the Gigabyte Windforce OC 5070 Ti for the GPU. Now I just need to get everything else lol.

I've been super impressed with the Lian cases. I got my wife the Dynamix XL a few years back and it's great. I've also been a huge fan of liquid cooling since my wife's computer has never had any issues with temps...except when we don't properly clean the cat hair out of it.

I think I'd like to go with 4TB for storage as I have 2TB already full.

As far as RAM, are there any real differences between vendors? Or is it comparing apples to apples assuming same specs?

When talking cooler, fans, etc I had picked Lian components as folks say its easier to run the software instead of having fans from company X, cooler from company Y, controller from Z ... etc. I've had issues mixing things, software not talking and configuring RGB every time I reboot. My wife's computer is this way.. when it reboots I have to go into it and take 5 minutes to configure everything the way she wants it on 3 different platforms.

Lian Li CLCs are not the best, but YMMV, I would go with the arctic 360mm pro cooler. Different venders on RAM are pretty apple to apples unless there is some super good OCing die that one vender uses at the same price.

For any zen 5 processor, I recommend low latency 6000 mhz cl30. The Mlmanufacturer doesn't matter. Verify the QVL list in the motherboard Manufacturer's site to ensure compatibility.

Rgb software has also been a mess. Keeping the same type of fan with the same manufacturer will save you some headaches but won't guarantee that it will work properly. I recommend using the same argb connector on the motherboard to prevent different rgb effects on the fans (one signal to all fans if possible) .

When you say the same RGB connectors on the MOBO what do you mean? While looks are not overly important, I'm trying to get to this looks.. or as close as possible.

https://pcpartpicker.com/b/rVXbt6

And I know y'all provided a lot of suggestions for MOBOs.. but can you explain like I'm 5? I'm not sure I know what I want in a MOBO. WIFI in the past was not important, but I think it is now based on losing internet from time to time and had to actually use it. But overall I think it would be connectivity. slots, ports, OC capability, etc.

Sounds like the 9800x3d isn't really something I would OC or not need to as the GPU would be taking on the bulk of the work. So can I save by not getting a MOBO that would be a good OC MOBO and focus other features?
