I'll just recite what happened because its easier

  1. Used Fedora Media Writer to write to a 128gb usb 3.2 usb drive
  2. Set "USB Hard Disk" (or something like that) to first boot order
  3. PC restarts and shows a black screen except for a single backwards L with a blue background
  4. PC boots back into Windows
  5. Try writing again, same result
  6. Try using rufus instead, same result
  7. Switched to an older 16gb drive, used rufus,
  8. Set "USB Key" to 1st boot order
  9. Same result
I haven't been able to find anything about this, and its not even saying anything about the boot failing. I don't know if it will help but my motherboard is a msi b550m pro vdh-wifi with bios version from this march and default settings except for oc genie and fan curves.

First make sure that secure boot is disabled.
Second do not change the permanent boot order for installing, that will throw off the installer and it will install the boot files to the wrong drive.
Use the one time boot menu to boot the installer usb, the key to press should show up on the screen very early during boot up.

Can you show that backwards L ?! Never heard that one before.

I already tried disabling secure boot and using the boot menu and it didn't help unfortunately. I don't have an imgur account but its basically a black screen with a single blue square on the right with a white backwards L.

Here's what shows up after I boot from the boot menu
And where is the "backward L"?

Looks like the computer doesn't detect any bootable usb drives. Are you sure your usb drive is really seen in the BIOS and the usb option your are using is not just a generic one? You could remove the usb drive and see if the option is still there. If it is, then your drive is probably not even read. It can happen if the boot mode is wrong (CSM instead of UEFI, for example).

IDK it seems kind of quirky. First when I went to use Rufus to mount the iso I got a message about the grub loader with various options. I just clicked YES to let Rufus do its thing and download whatever grub update it needed. So then Rufus mounted the ISO on my usb. I didn't mess with any of the Rufus settings since they come from the iso. Then when I booted the USB I got some message about booting like the one shown above and I just let the computer restart and now on the list of bootable devices one of them was marked Fedora. So I chose that and the next window came up and I chose the Live option and now I'm using Fedora and it works just fine. Perhaps you don't have the correct iso. Does it say

Fedora-Workstation-Live-42-1.1.x86_64.iso
