So I wanted to add more internal storage in my PC and it has an extra M.2 slot. I know what type of SSD I need but now I'm wondering will it add to the overall storage or will I have have 2 drives now and have to choose which one to save or install to?

You should be able to assign a new drive letter to the new drive.

If you now have just C, then you'd likely assign the letter D to the new drive within Windows Disk Management, but you could use E, F, or some other letter.

You'd then have the choice of saving files to C or D.

Standard procedure would be to continue to install programs to C and just use D for data files as you see fit.

Of course it will, that's why you are adding another disk !! It's not just going to be a continuous space but will show as another disk. I wouldn't recommend it but you can also do this,

There's absolutely nothing wrong with adding another drive, naming it the D: drive (or anything else) and saving anything you want to it. I don't see the issue... this has been one of the ways to add storage since computers were created.
If you're too sensitive to do it that way, get a new drive double the size of the existing one (or more), clone the current drive to it, boot to it with the original drive removed, and then expand the partition to include all the space.
